Of tion of General Sir William Gascoigne's Despatch No. 41 of

36051

Go the 28th. of last January, I have the honour to draw your at-

tention to paragraph 5 of Despatch No. 178 of the 7th. of last

May from the Officer Administering the Goverment, in which

it is stated that even if the recommendations of the Education

Committee are adopted, the Staff of Masters at Queen's College

cannot be reduced unless the number of pupils come to be very

largely reduced.

2.

The Headmaster now reports that it is

urgently necessary to fill these two vacancies in his Staff

and in view of the fact that there are at present over 1,100

boys in attendance at Queen's College with only six English

Masters, whereas at the Central School there was the same

English Staff for less than half the number of scholars, I

think it desirable that the vacancies in question should be

filled at once.

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
